The muscles of the neck, and Scapulae can have deleterious effects on posture and function of the body when there is an imbalance. The effects may be so profound that they even cause headache and pain. Bad Stress (Distress) often manifests physically throughout tightening and shortening of the muscles of the neck extensor, trapezius, and occipital muscles. Chronic tightening can lead to an imbalance known as shortening. The shortening of muscles leads to the lengthening of antagonist muscles. That is where imbalances occur. Additionally, in today's society, sedentary lifestyle, work habits and the use of cell phones leads to chronic shoulder slouch and slumping and forward leaning head. All of these can lead to headache and discomfort. The Cumulative Injury Cycle

Image
Andy Curtiss,   BEXSc, NASM - CPT, CES, PES; SNC, CNLP  W hen it comes to injuries, they can generally be broken down into two categories: acute and chronic.  Acute injuries  are those that are severe with a sudden onset. These injuries can include trauma injuries.  Chronic Injuries  occur over the course of time and are prolonged. In the field of physical therapy and  corrective exercise , these are considered  overuse injuries . Acute injuries can become chronic, and it is debatable as to whether all chronic injuries began as acute. The semantics of this debate will not be discussed here. What will be discussed is the model for the cumulative injury cycle. The  cumulative injury cycle  can be used to explain how acute injuries become chronic, as well as how overuse injuries occur. It is recommended that prior to reading this article one has a basic understanding of  the healing response .  Stages of The Cumulative Inju...

Andy Curtiss,  BEXSc, NASM - CPT, CES, PES; SNC, CNLP  E verybody has experienced what its like when you get cut. If you haven’t been cut, then you have likely been scraped or bruised. But what happens when you get injured? Why is it that we just don’t bleed out and die, and how does blood clot? We hear all the time that the external environment has pathogens and bacteria that can cause infection; why is it when we get scraped or cut, that we don’t always get infections? The answers to these questions lie within the  innate immune system  and the healing process. This article seeks to educate you on the 3 stages of healing and introduce you to the innate immune system. Healing can be broken down into three stages, Inflammation, Proliferation, and Remodeling.  Inflammation The human outer membrane and protective layers of the skin ( The body’s largest organ system ) are broken which causes damage to capillaries and blood vessels, that results in spasm.   Andy Curtiss, BEXSc, NASM - CPT, CES, PES; SNC, CNLP      Increase weekly physical activity Its proven that people who exercise at least 30 minutes a day, up to 5 times a week for a total of 150 minutes weekly are less likely to be overweight or obese. They are also less likely to get sick or suffer from chronic disease. The National Institute of Health (NIH) Recommends as little as five – 30 – minute sessions of moderate to high intensity exercise a week to stave off poor health and obesity Stop after dinner snacking The literature has shown that those who tend to snack more after dinner are also more likely to show signs of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can lead to overweight, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and Type II Diabetes Meletus. This is particularly true for those who snack closer to bedtime.  Go to bed an hour earlier each night Studies have shown that getting to bed earlier leads to feeling more energized in the mornings. This can have benef...
